Finding Strength in a Spiritual Father & Mother

Ever notice how everyone these days seems to have a coach for just about everything? Life coaches, career coaches, even coaches to help you hit those gym goals. It’s like we crave someone with more know-how to guide us. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. But I’ve been thinking, what if we need something deeper? Something that goes beyond just knowledge and skills?

There’s a story that comes to mind about this. Picture this: A guy named Paul, who was all about the heart stuff. He wasn’t just a teacher; he was a father figure to many. In a world full of mentors, he stood out because he genuinely cared about the character and heart of those he was guiding. He once said to a bunch of people who looked up to him, You’ve got tons of teachers and mentors, but not many fathers. That’s some real talk right there.

So, what’s the deal with having a spiritual father or mother? Here are three things you’ll get from watching the video:

1. The difference between mentors and spiritual parents.
2. Why spiritual fathers and mothers focus on the heart.
3. How to find your own spiritual parent.

1. The difference between mentors and spiritual parents.

Mentors are great. They share knowledge and help you get better at specific things. But spiritual parents? They’re on another level. They’re not just about making you smarter or more skilled. They’re invested in who you are at your core. They want to see your heart grow and your character develop. It’s like having someone who’s got your back in the most meaningful way.

2. Why spiritual fathers and mothers focus on the heart.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life, chasing after success and ticking boxes. But what about our hearts? Spiritual parents care about what’s happening inside us. They see beyond the surface and press into those deep, sometimes messy parts of our lives. It’s about nurturing the soul, not just the mind.

3. How to find your own spiritual parent.

If you’re thinking, Yeah, I could use someone like that, then you’re not alone. Finding a spiritual parent isn’t about scrolling through some online directory. It’s about connecting with someone who’s a mature follower of Christ. Someone you trust and respect. Have a chat with them, and if it feels right, ask them to step into that role in your life. Give them the green light to guide you, challenge you, and pour into your life.

A Real-Life Example

Let’s talk about how this plays out in real life. Imagine you’re a young professional hustling in your career. You’ve got mentors who help you climb the corporate ladder. But then there’s Sarah, a wise woman from your church. She’s been through life’s ups and downs and has a heart of gold. She becomes your spiritual mother, offering wisdom that’s not just about work but about life. She helps you navigate tough decisions, always pointing you back to what truly matters—the state of your heart.

For even if you had ten thousand others to teach you about Christ, you have only one spiritual father.

For I became your father in Christ Jesus when I preached the Good News to you.

1 Corinthians 4:15 NLT

In a world full of coaches and mentors, having a spiritual father or mother can be a game-changer. They’re the ones who care about your heart and your character, not just your achievements. So, what do you think? Could you benefit from having a spiritual parent in your life?
