Yahweh responds, “But how could a loving mother forget her nursing child and not deeply love the one she bore? Even if a there is a mother who forgets her child, I could never, no never, forget you. 16 Can’t you see? I have carved your name on the palms of my hands! Your walls are always my concern. Isaiah 49:15-16
Yesterday we saw how God loves us as tenderly as a mother does her child. The Bible uses two metaphors to show us the depth of love God has for us; a committed spouse in marriage and as a loving parent. Both of these types of love describe the intimacy and trust God wants between us.
Isaiah recognizes there are exceptions in comparing God to flawed humanity. Parents will be selfish, spouses will be inconsiderate, but God will never stop loving us perfectly and unconditionally. Consider the overwhelming love a couple experiences on their wedding day or the emotions of a mother when her child is first laid in her arms. These examples are given not just for our enjoyment. They are woven into humanity so we can experience a glimpse of God’s unfailing love.
God goes as far as tattooing our names on the palm of His hand. He is always thinking about surrounding us with walls of protection and helping us overcome the walls that are obstacles to us.
