When proverbs guide life-changing decisions

Ever had one of those moments when you need to make a big decision? Like, really big. I found myself thinking back to a time when I was standing at a crossroads. We had just built this lovely house. The kind of place you’d dream about, complete with a view of a stunning mountain. And then, out of nowhere, the opportunity to move across the country for a missions organization pops up. Yep, it was a big deal.

We had it pretty good. Comfortable job, happy family, and a brand-new home. But something inside me kept saying, Hey, maybe you should do this. The more I thought about it, the more I realized I needed to talk to my wife. But how do you start that conversation? I knew I needed to have faith. Real faith.

So, I grabbed my Bible and started reading Proverbs. I enjoy reading the chapter that matches the day of the month. February 24th, so Proverbs 24 it was. And then I came to this verse:

“Complete your outdoor work and prepare your field. Afterwards, build your house.” Proverbs 24:27 CSB

That hit me like a ton of bricks. On any other day, it could’ve just been words on a page. But that day? It felt like a sign. Like God was speaking directly to me.

It reminded me of something important:

  • Sometimes, the answers we seek are right there in front of us in the pages of the Bible.
  • Listening to your heart can guide you when your mind is in overdrive.
  • Faith isn’t just about believing; it’s about acting, too.

Proverbs says the word of God is living and active. It cuts right through all the noise, dividing soul and spirit, heart and mind. When you’re stuck in your head, maybe it’s time to tune into what’s going on in your heart.

So, next time you’re wrestling with a decision, think about checking out Proverbs. You never know what kind of wisdom you might find.
