Their “webs” cannot substitute as clothing, they cannot cover themselves with the lies they spin, nor can their works cover them adequately. Their actions are evil, and the wages of violence is in their hands. 7 Their feet eagerly run after evil, and they are swift to shed innocent blood. Their imaginations are filled with evil; destruction and desolation litter their paths. 8 They know nothing of the way of peace, and injustice is their way of life. Their paths are so crooked that no one who walks in them knows peace.
9 For this reason, justice is far from us and righteousness doesn’t reach us. We hope for light, but sadly, there is only darkness. We wait for a bright light, but walk in darkness. Isaiah 59:6-9
The truth is not always easy to confront. Sin that seems like no big deal to us grieves God. When we try to hide or justify sinful behavior, wrong attitudes, or maybe unforgiveness, we leave a path of destruction that hurts others and misrepresents God. How do we get here? The writer of Hebrews says, we “drift away” from truth (Heb. 2:1). Sometimes it is not intentionally turning from God, it is a step away toward the distractions that maybe are not even that bad, but they cause us to slowly drift away.
This distance we create shuts down any insight or leading from God. Instead, we are left on our own to figure out life without God’s wisdom and love guiding us. Prayers are prayed but God doesn’t seem to hear or respond.
What do we do when we find ourselves in this place? We approach God in humility. We confess our distraction and turn from the things in which we have tried to escape or fill our lives. God is always quick to forgive and receive us. He brings us out of darkness where we can see Him more clearly.
