Big God, little… – July 12, 2023

“Are you afraid of these idols? Do they terrify you? Is that why you have lied to me and forgotten me and my words? Is it because of my long silence that you no longer fear me? Now I will expose your so-called good deeds. None of them will help you. Let’s see if your idols can save you when you cry to them for help. Why, a puff of wind can knock them down! If you just breathe on them, they fall over! But whoever trusts in me will inherit the land and possess my holy mountain.” Isaiah 57:11‭-‬13

I don’t know where I first heard it, but I have repeated the statement many times, “Big God, little problems. Little God, big problems.” In other words the bigger our fears become by focusing on our problem, the less we look to God and the smaller He becomes in our thoughts.

This is what seems to have happened with the Israelites. They intermarried with the local tribes and took on their gods. Then they started to live to appease these gods rather than living to please the one true God. As a result God goes silent and allows them to stumble along without Him.

It is easy for us in modern times to fall into the same pattern. We quit going to church, we stop worshiping, we stop giving and serving. In the back of our minds we know we have our savings, our abilities, our resourcefulness to take care of ourselves. Do we really need to bother God? But, all of these things in which we are investing our lives are not stable. God is the solid rock on which we build our lives. He is our provider. He is the one in whom we stand in awe and humbly worship.
