Here are the words of the true God, Yahweh, the one who created the starry heavens and stretched them out. He is the one who formed the earth and filled it with life. He gives breath to every person and spirit to everyone everywhere. 6 “I, Yahweh, have commissioned you in righteousness to succeed. Isaiah 42:5-6
Today is Maundy Thursday. This is the day we commemorate Jesus gathering with His disciples for the Jewish Passover or Last Supper before His arrest and crucifixion.
Isaiah’s words are appropriate as we dwell on the idea that the Creator of all had such love and compassion for you and I that He was willing to come and take the punishment for our sins so we could be free. He is the one who gave us breath and meaning. Though we have sinned, rejected God, and failed to obey His guidance, His overwhelming still pursues us and His plans are for us to succeed.
I want to pull back today from my agenda and press into Jesus. I want to worship Him for what He has done for me and live in the righteousness for which He paid such a high price.
I love the hymn “Near the Cross”. The third verse is my prayer today,
“Near the cross! O lamb of God,
Bring its scenes before me;
Help me walk from day to day
With its shadow o’er me.”
