02.07.23 The Wait

And on this mountain, he will destroy the shroud wrapped around all the people, the veil spread over all nations. 8 It is the gloom of death! He will swallow it up in victory forever! And God, Lord Yahweh, will wipe away every tear from every face. He will remove every trace of disgrace that his people have suffered throughout the world, for the Lord Yahweh has promised it!
9 In that day they will say, “Behold! This is our God! We’ve waited for him, and he saved us! This one, the Lord Yahweh—he is worth the wait! Isaiah 25:7-9

The thought of death hangs over every person. It may only arise to the surface of our thoughts at the news of someone’s passing or when we attend funerals, but our mortality is there. Jesus takes this concern off of us. We don’t fear eternity because we know it is the ultimate victory for everyone who follows Christ. The moment of death Jesus wipes every tear of regret from our eyes. He will remove fear, anxiety, shame, any sense of unworthiness or disgrace. He perfects us and embraces us.

Isaiah uses this picture of eternity to encourage us to draw close to God now and trust Him. Every sacrifice will be worth it. Every denial of some momentary pleasure to instead choose holy intimacy with God, will be worth it. He is worth waiting on, no matter the cost or how long it takes.
