The sun has set on their gladness and joy; celebrations have disappeared from the earth. 12 The city is left desolate with its gates battered down. 13 As an olive tree is shaken clean of its olives and a grapevine picked clean of its grapes, so will be the fate of the nations.
The Song of the Remnant
14 The remnant lifts up its voice with a joyful shout. From the west they praise the majesty of the Lord Yahweh, 15 and in the east they give glory to the Lord God! The coastlands magnify the name of Yahweh, the Lord God of Israel! 16 From all over the world we hear their songs of praise— songs of glory and beauty to the Righteous One! Isaiah 24:11-16
Isaiah records his apocalyptic vision in chapters 24-26. It parallels portions of the Book of Revelation. Without getting deep in eschatology, I am focusing on how two groups of people responds to extremely difficult circumstances.
The first group (verses 11-13) has lost all sense of security and happiness. The security they found in their nation’s strength and resources is gone. Everything they have trusted in has failed them. They are vulnerable, empty, and in despair.
The next group (verses 14-16) live in the same world under the same circumstances. They have chosen not to look to the government or any human resource. Their focus is on the God of Heaven.
This “remnant” experiences the same crisis, but they respond in worship. They know God will take care of them, and this shaking will humble the proud who will hopefully turn to God.
