This is what the Lord Yahweh, the Commander of Angel Armies, has to say: “Go to Shebna, the treasurer of the palace, and say to him, 16 ‘What right do you have to be here, and who gave you permission?
19 I will kick you out of office and pull you down from your high position!’ 20“On that day, I will appoint my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah, to take your place. 21 I will honor him by clothing him with your robe and binding your priestly sash upon him. I will transfer your authority into his hands, and he will be a fathers to those living in Jerusalem and to the people of Judah. 22 I will place upon his shoulders the key to the treasures of David’s palace. He will open doors that no one can shut, and he will shut doors that no one can open. Isaiah 22:15-16, 19-22
This is God’s politics. Isaiah prophesies that God will remove those who force their way into leadership and replace them with His choice. Maybe if we as God’s people trusted God to do what only He can do, instead of feeling helpless and angry about a given political situation. We would pray and God would carry out His will.
This passage is also a prophecy pointing to Jesus who will come in about 700 years and take up the Throne of David and rule.
We see this same language used by John in the Book of Revelation chapter 3:7 who quotes Isaiah’s prophecy to encourage a church who feel overwhelmed about the culture around them.
Bottom line: Jesus reminds Isaiah, the people of Israel, the Church at Philadelphia, and we as His people today, He is in control and we can trust Him.
